# First Image in 10 Minutes – LumiScan Documentation

You end with an image and a point cloud of your LumiScan X on screen, and both saved as files. Six steps; each one ends with **Done when** and points to the next.

**Your progress - tick off each step as you finish it**

- [1. Check the system requirements](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-1)
- [2. Install the software](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-2)
- [3. Connect the camera](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-3)
- [4. Configure the connection](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-4)
- [5. Capture an image](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-5)
- [6. Save the capture](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-6)

> [!TIP]
> Working with another camera than a LumiScan X, or with a ctrlX CORE? Use [Your First Industrial Vision Application](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-application.html) instead: it starts with the Cam Driver, which connects GenICam cameras.

## Step 1 of 6 - Check the system requirements {#step-1}

You need:

- the LumiScan X and a 24 V DC power supply - or Power over Ethernet from a PoE port or a PoE injector
- an Ethernet cable CAT6A, S/FTP shielded, M12 male to RJ45 male, and for the 24 V supply the 5-pin sensor/actuator cable
- a computer with at least an Intel i5 2.4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 1650 and an Intel Ethernet Adapter I210 (or better), with the operating system listed in [Software Requirements](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/product-description.html#sec-software-requirements)
- the LumiScan software installer and your LumiScan Key (the USB licence key)

**Done when:** everything on the list is on your desk.\
**Next:** [Step 2 - Install the software](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-2)

## Step 2 of 6 - Install the software {#step-2}

1. Install **CodeMeter Runtime** 9.00 or later and plug in the LumiScan Key, as described in [Installing CodeMeter Runtime](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-licensing/1.0.4/installing-codemeter.html).
2. Close all open applications and run `Installer_LumiScanX_<version>.exe`.
3. Accept the licence terms, keep or change the installation folder, and click **Install**, **OK** and **Finish**.

Details: [Installation](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/installation.html#sec-installation-software).

**Done when:** **Start → HD Vision Systems → LumiScan Viewer** exists.\
**Next:** [Step 3 - Connect the camera](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-3)

## Step 3 of 6 - Connect the camera {#step-3}

Choose one way to power the camera:

- **24 V power supply:** screw the M12 plug of the Ethernet cable into the 8-pin socket on the back of the camera (hand-tight, no pliers), connect the RJ45 end to the computer, screw the sensor/actuator cable to the 5-pin socket and connect the 24 V supply.
- **PoE port on the computer:** connect the Ethernet cable from the 8-pin socket to the PoE port.
- **PoE injector:** computer → injector **In**, injector **Out** → 8-pin socket, then plug in the injector.

> [!WARNING]
> Operate the camera with 24 V nominal voltage only, from a supply that meets the SELV and LPS requirements. See [Installation](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/installation.html#ch-installation) for all safety notes.

**Done when:** about 30 seconds after power-on the camera has started.\
**Next:** [Step 4 - Configure the connection](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-4)

## Step 4 of 6 - Configure the connection {#step-4}

1. **Network adapter:** in the Windows Ethernet settings of the port the camera is on, open **Configure → Advanced** and set jumbo frames to **Maximum (9014 bytes)**, **Receive Buffers** and **Transmit Buffers** to **2048**. See [Network Settings](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/installation.html#sec-network-settings).
2. **Firewall:** start the **LumiScan Viewer**. When Windows asks whether it may access the network, allow it - otherwise the camera is not found. See [Windows Firewall](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/installation.html#sec-windows-firewall).
3. **Camera IP address:** in the LumiScan Viewer open **Menu → IP Configuration**, click **Refresh**, select the camera, enable **Static IP**, enter an address in the subnet of your network adapter and click **Apply**. A static IP is strongly recommended over DHCP. See [Camera IP Configuration](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/lumiscan-software.html#sec-camera-ip-configuration).
4. **Calibration file:** in the **Calibration** section, enter the camera’s `.hdvcal` file; by default the files are in `C:\ProgramData\HD Vision Systems GmbH\calibration`.

**Done when:** the camera is listed and selected in the LumiScan Viewer, with its calibration file.\
**Next:** [Step 5 - Capture an image](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-5)

## Step 5 of 6 - Capture an image {#step-5}

1. Click the green triangle (**start capturing**). The image appears in the viewer; the thirteen preview images at the edge switch between the cameras of the LumiScan X.
2. Open the **Point Cloud** tab to see the 3D data; scroll to zoom, drag with the left mouse button to rotate, with the right one to move.
3. If the image is too dark or too bright, or the point cloud is sparse, adjust exposure and depth range in the settings panel, see [Camera Settings Configuration](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/lumiscan-software.html#sec-camera-settings-configuration).

**Done when:** you see your object as an image and as a point cloud.\
**Next:** [Step 6 - Save the capture](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/getting-started/first-image.html#step-6)

## Step 6 of 6 - Save the capture {#step-6}

1. In the settings panel under **Capture**, choose what to export: **Capture Center View** for the image of the centre camera, **Capture .ply/.pcd Point Cloud** for the point cloud. The default folder is `C:\Users\<user>\HDVisionSystems\LumiScan\export`.
2. Click the **photo icon** to export the current capture. (The **record icon** exports every frame until you click it again - at 6 FPS that is 360 frames per minute.)

See [Data Export](https://docs.hdvisionsystems.com/en/lumiscan-x/2.0.0/lumiscan-software.html#sec-data-export).

**Done when:** the image and the point cloud are files in the export folder - your first LumiScan X capture.
